Beer and whisky often go hand in hand. Now, the taste can just go in one hand with J.P. Wiser’s Hopped: a distinctive blend of J.P. Wiser’s whisky and hops for a rich, dark ale finish. J.P. Wiser’s Hopped is made using traditional Canadian Whisky methods, but blended using methods from the brewing industry. At the very end of the process the blended whisky is dry hopped in the same fashion as India Pale Ale beers. J.P. Wiser’s Hopped was developed from aging whisky in three types of barrels: previous Canadian whisky fills, once used American bourbon casks, and brand new virgin oak casks.
Bitter sweet aromas of caramel, cocoa and coffee rush out of the glass carried on a waft of alcoholic astringency. There's something suggestive of hops on the nose but I really have to go digging for it. Below the edge of muddled candied fruit and rye spice, they are akin to tomato leaves and pithy citrus smushed together in wet cardboard.
Huge mocha flavours dominate the palate. Thin-bodied, the spirit shows a thread of sharp rye flavours punctuated with aromatic citrus zest.
In the moderately long finish, the hop flavours along with those of roasted malt, cocoa and coffee combine to create the effect of having just eaten a Tootsie Roll soaked in alcohol.
