A name like that may have you thinking it came straight out of a fairy tale, perhaps a witch woman’s potion to poison the prince. Yet, the green gimlet is anything but a potion. Mix your own Green Gimlet…
Before you begin, have some simple (sugar) syrup handy. If you are a barsmith, chances are there is always some at your disposal. If not, combine equal parts sugar with water. Boil till the sugar dissolves. Let it cool down and voila! There you have it. A quick tip is to add in a few drops of mint essence in your simple syrup to jazz it up. The minty freshness works particularly for the cocktail you’re about to make.Now, time for some stirring.
Begin by muddling 4 to 5 fresh leaves of basil with 20 ml of your minty simple syrup, 30 ml of freshly squeezed lime juice, and 60 ml of Scotch whisky. Muddle them well to allow the basil leaves to ooze out some of that delicious aroma. Shake, shake, shake till your arms ache. Kidding. Shake well and strain into a chilled serving glass. Make sure you drink is chilled well because that’s how it packs a punch.
If you’re serving it at a house party, dress up your glass. Dip the rim of your glass in lemon juice. Follow it up by dunking it in some green dusting sugar. Now pour your drink, add a basil leaf and watch your guests go gaga over the green gimlet.
Royal Salute’s citrusy nose, lightly spicy aftertaste and smoothness makes it a great choice for this cocktail. But go ahead and use whichever scotch you best prefer. Cheers!
