A marsupial involved in a liquor heist? Incredible but true! It was an unusual day just after Thanksgiving. An opossum who lost its trail and landed at a liquor store in Florida was discovered drunk on bourbon whiskey by the store employee on Nov. 24, 2017. Lying sloshed next to an empty and broken bourbon bottle, the opossum seemed pale, disoriented, and salivating.
This amusing incident also highlights the popularity of this American spirit from Kentucky. Its dry, nutty, and spicy flavour profile along with the elegant smoothness surely seems to have a fan in not just the whiskey connoisseurs but also an animal.
The liquor store owner Cash Moore was bemused and said he never had an opossum breaking in before. He further added, “She came in from the outside and was up in the rafters, and when she came through she knocked a bottle of liquor off the shelf. When she got down on the floor she drank the whole damn bottle. But it just goes to show that even the animals are impressed with Cash’s.”
The opossum who was safely rescued was sobered up at a wildlife rescue center. Michelle Pettis, a technician at the wildlife refuge said, “The opossum was brought in by a Fort Walton Beach police officer on Nov. 24. A worker there found the opossum up on a shelf next to a cracked open bottle of liquor with nothing in it. She definitely wasn’t fully acting normal.”
The opossum didn’t have a hangover, was provided with medical treatment and loaded with fluids to eliminate the alcohol toxins from her system.
The unique creature recovered well in a few days and was released unharmed back into the wild landscape-- just goes to show that the good old American bourbon whiskey club has people and possum cheering alike.
