Royal Stag sold 12.3 million cases in 2011 to become Pernod Ricard’s biggest selling brand in its global portfolio. It sold a whopping 18 million cases in 2016.
Positioned in the ‘deluxe segment’ in the Indian Whisky Market, Royal Stag targets to the upper middle class between the ages of 25-40. The brand is known to use Cricketers and Bollywood stars in order to promote itself, and goes with the famous slogan, ‘It’s your life, make it large’.
In 2011, Royal Stag had a conflict with United Spirits Ltd in which the latter made a spoof of a Royal Stag commercial staring Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh. The spoof ad featured Indian cricketer M.S. Dhoni where they also stared a Harbhajan look-alike. Later on, United Spirits Ltd was forced to withdraw the advertisement when Harbhajan Singh sent them a legal notice.
Royal Stag has had many cricketers from around the world as Brand Ambassadors, including Glenn McGrath from Australia, Jonty Rodes from South Africa and Wasim Akram from Pakistan to name just a few. Indian cricketers like M.S. Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, and Gautam Gambhir have also featured in Royal Stag advertisements.
Royal Stag’s first commercial with Saif Ali Khan as the Brand Ambassador aired in 2007. In 2010, Seagram had signed Shah Rukh Khan as its brand ambassador for a period of one year, to promote the brand.
In 2002, Seagram's Imperial Blue and Royal Stag were emerged as fastest growing whisky brands in domestic market. RS Whisky had a high, 53% rise in its sale from 1.12 million cases in 2001 to 1.75 million case in 2002.In 2010, Royal Stag first time crossed the mark of 10 million cases, which made Pernod Ricard the first multinational company to cross this figure in India. In 2013 calendar month, Royal Stag first time crossed retail sale worth more than $1 billion, where it had a total of $1.3 billion in retail sale. 2014 saw Royal Stag selling 16.1 million cases, and wherein it remained the third biggest-selling whisky in India from 2011, following Officer's Choice and McDowell's No.1.
