The Glenlivet 18-Year-Old is a single malt Scotch whisky, part of the core range from one of the most iconic, and historically paramount Speyside distilleries in Scotland.
One of the first ever Speyside Distilleries to obtain a license, The Glenlivet is a brand credited as the ‘single malt that started it all’. It is one of the world’s highest selling single malt whiskies, and the 18-Year-Old, among other expressions from the brand, have historically been great performers at whisky tasting competitions worldwide.
The very first pages of The Glenlivet’s history begin with founder George Smith’s resolve to create a single malt whisky that would not just be a single malt whisky, but THE single malt whisky. The story of The Glenlivet began in 1822 when the world had yet not foreshadowed the arrival of a single malt whisky that would single handedly redefine whisky making forever.
George Smith succeeded not only when it came to delivering a drink that soon became renowned by its reputation, but also when it came to becoming the first licensed distillery in the Speyside. For this, the other illicit distillers in the region made constant threats against Smith, and his distillery which made his resolve even stronger.
Instead of giving in to the threats, George Smith went about his business as usual but began to carry a pair of flintlock pistols on his person to prevent any ill-doings against him or the distillery where he indulged in his beloved craft.
This indomitable spirit, and the thirst for excellence propelled The Glenlivet brand towards success and continues to sustain it even today. After the passing of George Smith, his youngest son, John Gordon Smith took over the reins of the company in 1884, followed by his second great-nephew who took over in 1921.
The Glenlivet brand of single malt whiskies have long been revered as the quintessential Speyside whisky, and played a considerable part in the recognition of the Speyside as a separate whisky-making region with its own character and flavor notes.
The Glenlivet 18-Year-Old is matured in Oak barrels for a period of nearly 18 years before it is finished in ex-Sherry barrels from Spain. It was created by The Glenlivet Master Distiller Alan Winchester and has consistently been praised as a bold, elegant and well-balanced 18-Year-Old single malt.
Sherry is described as a type of dry wine, are aged in these barrels for a considerable amount of time, allowing the wine to soak deep into the wood as an exchange of flavors occurs slowly, over decades sometimes.
Whiskies aged in ex-Sherry barrels are known to absorb an array of flavors from the barrels which include nutty, dark chocolaty and fruity flavors. They also tend to be slightly darker in color which reflects perfectly in The Glenlivet 18-Year-Old, a warm amber/apricot colored single malt whisky packed with a tantalizing nose and intense flavors.
The Glenlivet 18-Year-Old single malt Scotch carries an alcohol strength of 43%, slightly higher than the permissible limit for Scotch whiskies.
